What shall we listen to first?
What "classic" audiodrama should we kick things off with on December 1, 2023?
This is the ribbon-cutting post of #AmListening, and it is a poll. I asked in the Audio Drama Lab for recommendations of “classic” audiodramas, and by coven rule — look, I don’t know any more than you why I’ve gone witchy with this thing* — I’ve picked five (5) - because that’s all Substack allows.
About the picks
In LifeAfter, Ross, a low-level employee at the FBI, spends his days conversing online with his wife Charlie – who died eight months ago. But the technology behind this digital resurrection leads Ross down a dangerous path that threatens his job, his own life, and maybe even the world.
Limetown: Ten years ago, over three hundred men, women, and children disappeared from a small town in Tennessee, never to be heard from again. In this podcast, pretend American Public Radio reporter Lia Haddock asks the question once more, "What happened to the people of Limetown?"
We’re Alive: for Army Reserve Soldier Michael Cross, the world as he knew it ended instantly. One minute, he's in college, and the next, rioters are roaming the highway around him, breaking into cars, and tearing people apart. This is the day the dead walk.
The Black Tapes is a serialized docudrama about one journalist's search for truth, her subject's mysterious past, and the literal and figurative ghosts that haunt them both.
WOLF 359 is a radio drama in the tradition of the Golden Age of Radio shows. Set on board the U.S.S. Hephaestus space station, the dysfunctional crew deals with daily life-or-death emergencies, searching for signs of alien life and discovering there might be more to their mission than they thought.
What happens next?
The plan 🤞 going forward is that on week three of a given listen, we’ll announce the next show. This first crack at it is a bit off schedule, so on Sunday, November 26th, I’ll announce the winner and provide all of the links you might need to find the given show.
We’ll start our first chat starting December 1. 🖤
I’m stoked, and excited to geek out about some amazing stories.
Your librarian,
Michael
Footnotes
I’m just having fun.
I picked Limetown because it sounds interesting and I'm a sucker for a mystery but I have to shout out Wolf359. It was one of the first three audio dramas I ever listened to and solidified my love of this media. Greatly done production. I can't wait to be able to talk to someone about my flavor of the month! Neat book club idea.
We were alive is so good! I was binge listening but I started to have weird zombie dreams (again) so I had to stop for a bit 😂
